One of America's Oldest Wagon Routes

Old Island is named for Old Island Road, one of America's oldest wagon routes--a roadway established even before the American Revolution.

Located in Sullivan County, Tennessee, Island Road was completed in September 1761, built by Major Andrew Lewis under the command of Colonel Adam Stephen. Island Road was the "military road" from Chilhowee, Virginia to historic Long Island in present day Kingsport.

Upon reaching the Long Island of the Holston, the militia "erected Fort Robinson to treat for peace with the Cherokees."
